Ok, here is the scenario. A friends 91 VR-4 was recently put back together (engine was pulled to paint the bay), and after reassembly, would not stay running with any of 3 MAFs. However, with no MAF attached, it would idle (better, not great), and you could rev it. With the MAF plugged in, the car would start, but as soon as any throttle input was given, she would stall and die. The fuel pump was hotwired. I noticed that the fuel pump relay was still there, however, I didnt see the fuel pump resistor unit. I pulled the relay, and installed a hot wire. We then tested with the MAF plugged in, and everything appeared resolved (ran it up to temp, throttle input, hot start). Im wondering if, perhaps, with the MAF unplugged, the ECU was in limp mode, and was running the fuel pump relay in high voltage (therefore providing a closed circuit to the hot wire relay in the trunk), and when the MAF was plugged in, the ECU went back into full operation, and once the car was running, it tried to use the low voltage circuit to cut fuel pressure, and essentially killed the trunk hotwire. I know I could confirm this with a few minutes use of a multimeter, however, the trunk was full of parts, and Im now 2+ hours away. Anyone else run into this?
