Ok hipsters, there is something I have always wondered about. I do and I dont get this and I feel stupid asking lol To go to the moon, we needed the powerful Saturn V. We couldnt go to the moon with any other rocket we had. But, when we went to the moon, we left from earth orbit. The S-IVB engine blasted us out of the earths orbit and on a path to the moon. That was a single engine. Why did we need the Saturn V to go to the moon when it actually was the S-IVB engine that sent us there? Was the Saturn V needed only to lift all the hardware and fuel that we needed to go to the moon? It seems that the power of the launch vehicle was moot, once you got into orbit, it had no bearing on us breaking out of the earths orbit. Please be gentle answering lol
