Ok ladies get ahold of yourselves. This is an insect worth paying attention to. The praying mantis. I had one as a pet about 12 years ago and really learned a lot about them. You all thought that the black widow spider was a cruel mate. Lol. With the black widow she at leasts liquify their mate. The mantis eats her mate (anything it catches that is) alive. That is if she catches him. I learned these were Gods chosen insect...to watch them and see them in prayer every living moment of their lives can be very spirit moving. Lucky (the lovely lady I found) was a rescued insect. I was walking one day and seen her in the middle of the road. Once i picked her 4.5 body up I noticed she was hurt bad. So that led me to taking her home with me. I kept her in a 5 gallon bucket. I continued to study this magical insect. I had to know why they are so sacred to the Chinese people. Upon further studying i noticed she had chewed off one of her massive claws. I was able to keep her six months. The last week of her life her abdominal region had grown twice the size of a mans thumb. I lived close to a wooded creek so feeding her was no problem. She loved mole crickets. I had to pull off their jumping legs so she could catch them with one claw. Well after noticing how big she was getting i decided to sleep on the couch so i could watch her closer....lol. Well i have very keen smell. I was awoken to see the most facinating thing. The creation of an egg sac. The smell was like phameldahyde. I knew of a person that actually paid $10 for each egg sac so i learned how to tell a living egg sac from a hatched egg sac. A fresh sac is a creamie white in color. They start turning a darker brown as the egg inhabitants start to come out. Average size of on is 1/16 for the first week. Watch these beauties. They truelly are a magic insect.
