Ok ... lets finally chat about essential oils!! Essential oils are powerful medicinal oils that contain a plants volatile essence. In other words, they are the oils that make plants and flowers smell good! Essential oils are made via one of the following methods: - Steam or water distillation - Chemical distillation (not one of my favorites) - Cold pressing or expelling - Enfluerage (a method of pulling the essential oils into an oil base using a glass plate) As I said previously, essential oils have extremely strong medicinal properties. (Thats one reason Im not a fan of the term aromatherapy, as I think it detracts from the potential therapeutic effects of the oils.) Essential oils are so powerful because: - They permeate the skin when applied topically. - They are oxygenating and can penetrate cell walls to carry nutrients that have therapeutic effects. - When inhaled, the chemicals in essential oils reach the brain and lungs. - Essential oils are strong enough to penetrate the blood/brain barrier. The bottom line is that essential oils should never be used without first doing a bit of research. In addition to their strong effects on health and emotions, they have the power to strip the finish off of furniture, melt plastic (with long-term exposure), and burn mucus membranes if not properly diluted. Their power requires respect and caution. Ill share more information this evening and throughout the week on the following: - Essential safety tips on how to use essential oils - Tips on which essential oils are contraindicated for which health conditions - Practical ways essential oils can be used every day for health and around the house - Information on which oils can be used while nursing and on babies and children - Information on the top 10 essential oils for home use - Ways to make your own essential oil products Stay tuned for more details!
