Ok, music nerd alert: Im a dedicated CD buyer/collector. I buy - TopicsExpress

Ok, music nerd alert: Im a dedicated CD buyer/collector. I buy all my music, and I look for the most deluxe/complete version of each release I decide to buy, and then purchase that one. My goal is to get everything that was recorded on any particular albums sessions (everything thats GOING to be released anyway) on one disc or set. Needless to say then that things like Japanese bonus tracks are a PITA for me, and I usually end up forgoing the domestic release to order the Japanese version. Sometimes a unique bonus track is necessary to secure a release in Japan, which I understand. However there are a few other trends that really Grind My Gears, lol: 1. Different bonus tracks for different territories - its actually not a new thing, anyone remember Ozzys Bark At The Moon? Who from the US actually knew about the track Spiders until the all-in re-issue several years ago? No, its not a new marketing tactic, but its becoming more common, and its a PITA. 2. Vinyl-only bonus tracks - ugghh. The vinyl-buying crowd buys because its VINYL, not for bonus tracks. Labels, please stop punishing your CD purchasers! 3. Deluxe versions released significantly later than the regular version. If ive already purchased the regular version, its infuriating to discover a Special Edition with more tracks is about to be released. - Im talking about the ones that come out a few months later with good bonus tracks from the album sessions, not the ones that come out years later with alternate takes and live tracks. 4. ... and this is the worst one to me... iTunes-only bonus tracks. Godf@xzz!dammit, Im buying the CD ffs... gimme all the songs!! FTR, I dont really care about bonus Live tracks or alternate-mix or demo-versions of songs from the albums as bonus tracks. Dont care. But studio tracks from the same session, of either original songs or covers? Yes, I want those, damn you. My brother is just like me - he ordered the DELUXE LIMITED EDITION w/ PATCH version of a recent black metal release, only to discover that the bonus track was not from those sessions, and had been released before as a bonus on the limited edition of their previous album, which he already had. But thats not all... its also come to light that theres a European Deluxe version of this CD, with a unique bonus cover song from the album sessions: arrgghhh. So these days Im FAR more cautious about buying even the albums Im most excited for. Ill wait... and wait... and research.. and wait some more. The net result is that for some albums my patience is rewarded with the version I hoped for... and that for some, which I definitely would have bought otherwise, they just get put off so long that they slip the mind and remain unpurchased, and will likely always remain so. Record labels, i love ya - you release my precious CDs and you provide me with employment from time to time making some of those CDs for you to release. Just, please... think about us lowly CD buyers while plotting your evil marketing schemes, lol. I promise Ill start buying more CDs again if I can be reasonably assured im getting everything.
