Ok, my horse isnt soft. Sometimes we have good days and he is, but hes very heavy on the forehand and I end up carrying him a lot. We just recently started on barrels as well, and this is becoming a problem because he runs through my hands coming down the homestretch and wont stop. Im not one to get a stronger bit, so how can I get him softer? I need a lesson but Im broke at the moment so thats not going to happen for a week or two lol. I ride in an eggbutt French link snaffle and he does pretty well in it, but sometimes he braces against it and just refuses to listen. He also has this awful habit of always shaking his head when I release contact and have a looser rein. Hes been adjusted, hes been massaged, hes been checked by a vet, teeth are done, its just a habit. He likes shaking his head, dont know why but its annoying. The only thing I can think of is because I end up holding him and carrying him in my hands hes trying to relieve the pressure on his mouth when he gets release. Which brings me back to needing him to soften up. Weve been working on getting him onto his haunches by extending and bringing him back, along with lots of transitions. But I end up on his mouth when we do the transitions too because he doesnt do it very well with seat cues yet. I do need to work on that, I know. But apparently I shouldnt be using draw reins to get him to carry himself, as I have been so adamantly told. What should I do?
