Ok...my two cents worth but important for people to understand. Our brain makes neurotransmitters that regulate our mood, anxiety, sleep, OCD tendencies, learning, and the list goes on. One neurotransmitter is serotonin and its involved with mood, anxiety, sleep, appetite regulation, etc. It is broken down in the brain as its used and one of its breakdown products is labeled 5-HIAA. People with depression have less serotonin and when you take a sample of spinal fluid and check the 5-HIAA level, it will be low. Studies of the spinal fluid 5-HIAA levels in people who have committed suicide reveal that the level is even lower than that found in people with depression denoting that the brain is really struggling and shutting down. Get this: when you compare the 5-HIAA level in suicide victims to the means with which they committed suicide, the people who choose a violent means of suicide such as hanging, self-inflicted gunshot wounds which almost certainly guarantees death verses overdosing or carbon monoxide or a means which may still allow for a rescue, those who use the more violent method have an almost non detectable level of 5-HIAA. This supports that an individual who dies by suicide truly is NOT his/her right state of mind- it isnt the person in control of his/her thought processes but the depression completely controlling him/her. Thats all I wanted to share.....
