Ok prepare for a RANT -I question everything about food production ,I believe its only fair that the public know the whole TRUTH though advertising & labelling Laws or not always clear. As in this advert , so Ive been asking direct questions to the Happy EGGS Co !!! Farm.My 1st Q:14,000 Hens wow. So what happens to the Girls once they have stopped laying eggs ? Whats the average age of your hens & what happens to them ?When they stop laying eggs ?Their Ans:Hi Pixie, Our concern for the welfare of our hens runs through all of our activities, including the actions we take with our hens once they become older. Hen productivity declines as they age, and they stop laying eggs that we can supply to supermarkets at around 72 weeks of age. When our hens reach the end of their laying lives, the hens are then used for meat within the food industry - a practice carried out by most companies in the egg industry. We make sure the practice of preparing the hens for meat is done in the most humane way possible, using pain-free gas (like the one mentioned in our above comment) - it is a method which has been approved by DEFRA, the RSPCAs Freedom Food Scheme, and the Humane Slaughter Association. As mentioned previously, please email us on [email protected] and well be happy to help if you want to discuss anything in more depth or have any questions. My 2nd Q: You always refer to the female chickens as The Girls but what about the Males what happens to the Male chicks. Their Ans: Hi Pixie, Thank you for getting in contact. As it is only hens which lay eggs, male chicks cannot be used on laying farms. Unfortunately, we cannot have any cockerels on our happy egg farms as we would run the risk of hens laying fertilised eggs. Our girls come from carefully chosen hatcheries run by people who care about welfare. But unfortunately, there are no ways of breeding female-only chicks, so the male chicks are put to sleep humanely using Argon Gas, which is completely pain free practice. It is a code of practice which has been approved by DEFRA, The RSPCA’s Freedom Food Scheme and the Humane Slaughter Association. We hope this is enough to assure you that we do all we can to make this process as humane as possible. But if you do have any further questions please do not hesitate to email our careline, wed be happy to help. Heres our email address [email protected]. When people say Vegans that dont eat EGGS are extreme. Wow on one farm they kept 14,000 Hens ,from what Im understanding 72 days is the longest these Hens have Life, then their are slaughtered for their flesh isnt that the bit thats extreme . I wonder how many chicks are hatched in total in these hatcheries in the UK & how many Male chicks are killed Ive asked them what they do with all the dead Males though they havent get back to me on that yet. The scale is madness how are they allowed to use the title for their company as HAPPY EGGS. Grrrr
