Ok, since everyone is PSAing, and I suddenly find that I have an opportunity to use it...badly - PSA - So this isnt some attempt to heckle people, but is something that Ive been noticing time and again, for years now, so, I now decide that it is time I speak out (also because I want to feel more smug than I already am, but with the help of a thinly veiled attempt at concealing my already inflated sense of self and belonging), so here I am saying it (figure of speech mofo, get a life already!), as best as a I can; so here goes.... right then, its happening... now... alrighty then? alrighty then!!! As I understand it, determiners are used for speech sounds, at the beginning of words that carry a specific sort; vowel or consonant. Now, this applies to abbreviations as well, and normally people use whichever article they see fit, keeping in mind the original, non-contracted form of the word, but given the fact that an abbreviation is used as a replacement of the word itself, the speech sound in use can change at times, and the letter determining the speech sound in the word, might (Im being polite for anyone who isnt catching on, I mean abso-f*cking-lutely will, just so you know) articulate a different one in an abbreviation (its abbreviated form, not some random abbreviation you decide to pull out of your arse!). Take for example, an MRI. a Magnet. See what I did there? The speech sound in use for that abbreviation, though denoted by a letter normally associated with consonant speech sounds, is one of vowel sound, thus, preceded by a determiner for vowel speech sounds. So, not a MRI. Okay? Technically speaking. English syntax and articulatory phonetics are clearly definied on this. Excuse me now, while I go and act pompous elsewhere... *Struts*
