Ok, so I committed a cardinal sin this morning, and entered facebook while the coffee maker was still perking.... Im aware that I have already offended some. I have strong opinions, but I start with an open mind and try to back those up with research and fact. Im absolutely dismayed today that I have had a campaign worker for a mayoral candidate contact me via private message and point blank ask, who is your vote for mayor. Our Canadian democratic election model includes one premise of a secret ballot. It is my right to vote as I please, without repercussion, and with anonymity that protects my decision. As an individual, it is also my right, if I so decide, to share my views, and to even share my choice. It is not, however, a candidates right to ask me how I vote! A candidate, or a candidates worker, volunteer, supporter, cheerleader, whatever you want to call them, can ask me to support, can ask me to consider, can encourage and attempt to sway my vote, but ultimately, my vote is MY vote, it is a part of the process, and ultimately, is none of your damned business unless I should so decide to share it with you! For the record and to be clear, I have yet to decide on my votes for the positions of Regional Chair or Mayor of Oshawa. I have created short lists for both positions, and the job interviews continue. I attended a number of candidate offices this week, seeking information to assist me, namely, I asked for platforms that I could study. I believe that I have a pretty strong understanding of the real issues within the city of Oshawa. My decisions to vote for any position candidates will be based on my understanding of the real issues, the whole package of issues, and will be made according to my research and determination of which candidate is best prepared to deal with all of those issues, not just isolated special interest issues. There is still time and room to sway my judgement, but it will be done on a professional level, with facts, and with a certain amount of my personal feelings of a candidates legitimacy, character and ability. Ive said it before, and will say it again.... Candidates be aware, your workers can sink you as quickly as your opponents can. End of rant! ps. coffee pot is nearly empty, I am safe to approach for the rest of the day! :)
