Ok so I have a situation that I need some input from some of you.... In other words no smartass jokes. Two contactors side by side both square D 60 amp 3 pole with a 208-240 volt coil connected to a commercial kitchen hood/ fan unit. They called saying they had a loud buzzing noise coming from the contactor box. When one of out guys got there he noticed that the contactor making the noise was under a conduit that came from the attic into the top of the box. Some condensation from the conduit appeared to drip onto the top of that contactor so we mounted another box next to the existing box and put a new contactor in it and everything seemed fine. A day or two passed and they called again saying that they had noise again. A different guy went there and installed another new contactor but used self drilling screws to screw all 4 corners to the back of the box (thinking that it wasnt mounted tight enough to the box. A few hours passed...they called again. This time I went out and checked the voltage to coil (about 218V) and disconnected the line and load from the contactor. I started it very loud buzzing sound, checked volts to coil (218V). Pulled contactor out of box but left coil wires connected. Silent except for a small hum. Put it back in box, still small hum. Connected line & load. Small hum. Closed box everything seemed ok then as I was leaving I was showing owner that it probably had some junk/dust in between contacts but when I went to turn it on it buzzed loudly again. So it pick up ANOTHER contactor this time a Furnas contactor a it has worked fine so far. Im thinking that the other 2 guys used self drilling screws causing metal particles to drop into the workings of the contactor. What are your experiences/thoughts on this?
