Ok so weve reached number one on my favourite albums of the year. It is To be kind by Swans. Not a easy band to get over on YouTube clips, this is one that really benefits from headphones and a darkened room. This is challenging music no doubt. At times brutal and others achingly beautiful, sonic soundscapes build from looped guitars and drums with Micheal Giras shaman like vocals almost hypnotising the listener. In so many reviews you hear that this band sounds like so and so. Swans sound like no one else and have so much depth and imagination its really quite remarkable. Who says old men (and women) cant produce new and vibrant music? This is a long album (over 2 hours) with long songs (bring the sun is 35 minutes long) but this is the record Ive come back to over and over again this year and everytime I find something new. Brave and challenging as truly inspirational music should be.
