Ok, so yesterday we spoke about how a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates can help prevent or reduce the effects of alzheimer disease. Here is some more good news, simple exercise, done on a regular basis, can also help. An active body = An active mind So if you like to read, read, who cares what it is, Romance (my favorite) SciFi (Docs favorite) mystery etc. Doesnt matter. Keep your mind active. Play music, cards, talk to people, do crafting. There are countless activities that will help keep you sharp. And if you like animals, you are in luck. May local shelters offer older dogs (4 years plus) to seniors at a reduce rate, usually $20. When you have a dog, they have to be walked. This will increase your activity level. And if your dogs are like ours, then when you are walking you start talking to people. Again engaging your mind. As I have mentioned before, alzheimer disease is very personal to me. I lost my grandmother to the effects of it back in 1985 when no one knew what it was. My grandmother ate a diet heavy in fats and sugars (she had come to the US from Russia and ate what they ate in the Old country). She never left her apartment unless she was dragged out. Just sat on the sofa and watched TV (and this is before cable). My grandmother did all the things that you are not supposed to do and she paid the price. Even if you dont do this 100%, because lets face it, those carbs and sweets are really tasty. At least try. The more you eat of the healthy stuff the better you will fill. The better you feel the more you will want to go to the mall and take a walk and do some window shopping or whatever streaks your interest. Like Doc always says We like our patients to live a long time. Its good public relations. So if you dont want to do it for yourself; do it for Doc.
