Ok, this is basically all I have thats fit for print: In 1995, Cuz and I had been friends for about 10 years and he was working on the set of an insanely great but short-lived tv show called American Gothic. Ohmigawd, was I crazy about that show!! It was freaky good and ahead of its time! Gary Cole was the lead and he was hot, hot hot! Every week when it was on, I would call Cuz and say, ARE YOU WATCHING??? and he would laugh and say, No, Im not watching, I saw it all week! Id blather on about wanting to meet Gary Cole and hed politely redirect the conversation because no way in hell was he going to bring a maniac out to the set to attack Gary Cole (which is probably exactly what would have happened). But he was really gracious about it and never blew me off or called me out for being a loon. I actually think he was pretty amused by how into it I was and he would tell me set stories about the cast and stuff that happened there that I just ate up. Anyway, for a couple of months, each week (like clockwork) the same thing: the show would start, Id call and holler ARE YOU WATCHING? and hed say, NO, I saw it all week! He always took my call and never acted like I was bugging him. In fact, a couple of times he beat me to the punch and called me first and said, NO, I am not watching it! Well, apparently I was the only one watching because it was canceled a few months later. Before the final wrap, Cuz got his hands on several pages of script re-writes that the actor Lucas Black had been using and brought them to me. You wouldve thought it was the Holy Grail - I completely flipped out! And then a little while later he invited me to a set he was on. I cant remember what show or movie it was but I was happy to go. I hung out and watched some of the shooting with him (behaving, btw; Gary Cole was safely in another city) and then during a break he showed me around the set. There was one makeshift hospital room there and I glanced at it and then did a double take. I remember saying to him, Is that what I think it is? And he just grinned and said, Uh huh! It was the exact same hospital room from American Gothic, which only a fanatic like me wouldve recognized!! I squealed like the girl I was and he let me run around the room and touch everything! I stopped short of rolling on the bed, but I wanted to! It was a huge thrill, especially since he let me figure it out instead of saying, Oh, look over there, recognize anything? Or, Look, its something from AG! That was a great day! I was also a Duke basketball freak and one day he just popped over and brought me the picture of him with Coach K in a frame. No Christmas or birthday or anything, just because he knew Id flip and I did. I jumped up and down for about 10 minutes until he finally said, Easy! And then, How bout you make me some French toast? That was the kind of person he was - happy to do things that were no big deal to him but that he knew would have a huge impact on someone else. And he could put away some French toast! I would give anything to hear him ask me for that again right now. Scott, you and your family are in my heart and prayers. I hope these posts are helping!
