Ok, this is from the next book in my Mary Randolph series that wont be published for a while, but on thinking about it, Gunny Roninson is close to the some of the Marines that I knew, back in the day [and of course, I need a plug for the next book~~so~] Many thanks to the real men who inspired the character. From To Keep a Dark Promise- ,Marine Gunnery Sergeant Robinson was a man I had only met once several years ago in Cuba when my great Uncle Perry MoonWalker took me along on a mission to that island. But he was the sort of man that always made an impression. Aging now, and balding under his buzz of gray hair, he seemed to always have a wry smile hovering around his thin lips. It could be the charming smile of a crony in the enlisted mens club, or one that on occasion if necessary, could strike sheer terror in the hearts of the men that worked for him. His eyes always slightly squinted, and seemed to be focused on a distant horizon, relaxed, but constantly on the alert. A man who would have been at home at any time in history where there was a need for bloodied warriors, he seemed, at all times to move through the world with the scent of smoke from ancient battle fields always floating in faint whisps around him.
