Ok, time for some Christmas spirit people. My sister, Anne, is once again a MASSIVELY better person that most of us...well, ME anyways. She has ALS and instead of dwelling on it, she gets off her ass (well not literally...she has people who listen to her REAL good) and GIVES to others. Here is the letter she wrote to me today. Take a minute to read it and consider sponsoring a bag for The Womens Shelter project she runs. I am going to Kelowna mid-December, so if youd like to get the money to me, Ill get it to her. Dear Family and Friends, I am writing you to see if you would like to sponsor a bag for our women’s shelter project. This is the seventh year my nurses, Lorne and I have collected toiletries for the Kelowna Womens shelter. We outdid ourselves again in 2012 filling 155 women’s bags and 100 children’s parcels, a few large boxes filled with supplies for the Shelter, and countless gifts. We were happy that 21 stores in our area contributed to our cause. Our project was featured in the Dailey Courier and on CHBC Global news. We also won $1,000 for the Shelter from the CFL Scotiabank Game Changers (thanks to my brother Mike) so we were also featured on TV on TSN during the last home game of the BC Lions in 2012. Here is a link to our story castanet.net/news/Kelowna/82623/BC-Lions-honour-Kelowna-hero. The Shelter said, ‘It is gifts and donations like yours that help our moms and their children through their difficult time.’ We were lucky to meet one woman who received one of our bags. We were all crying when she told us her story and what the bag meant to her. She also wrote me this note so I could put it in to my letters to companies, stores and dentists: My name is Deanne S. About 5 years ago, I found myself with 2 young children living in a womens shelter/transition home after my 18 year volatile marriage ended. In the last 5 years, I have put myself through nursing school, became a Licensed Practical Nurse, established a relationship with myself and my children, and remarried to a wonderful man. During my stay in the shelter, I was a recipient of a purple tote bag containing personal toiletry items such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, shaving cream etc. I had very little at the time so this act of generosity and kindness from a lady named Anne touched my soul and still brings tears of gratitude to me today. I wish to thank Anne and companies such as yours for your generous contributions to her bags. You help Anne facilitate her cause and it resonates with the recipients far more than you can imagine. So thank you and bless you. We don’t realize the impact the bags make on the women til we hear stories like Deanne’s. Here are some other notes we got from other women at the Shelter….“I will try to honor you and (your) gift by being a loving and caring person that gives hope and love to everyone around them.”…..”Your little gifts made such a great difference to me both physically and spiritually.” …..”I look forward to the day I can give back and make a difference as you did for me.” This year we have already received an amazing amount of donated products from the companies that make Nivea, Schick, and GUM. Buy their products, they make great stocking stuffers! So far, 21 stores in this area plus a few dentists have already generously donated items or gift cards. Our goal this year is to fill 160 women’s bags and 100 children’s bags. If you would like to sponsor a bag, the cost is $10. Note *THIS IS NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE so don’t break the bank on it. If you are sponsoring more than 1 bag, let me know what names to put on them (first names only). If you live in Kelowna and would rather buy items, just e-mail me and I will give you a list. Please don’t feel you have to sponsor a bag because I know you all give generously especially at Christmas. If you have already donated items or money, I am not asking for more, I just wanted to update you on our progress that you contributed to. You can make the cheque out to Lorne Brooks and mail it to 678 Greene Rd. Kelowna , B.C. V1W 1B8. Have a wonderful holiday season and thanks for any donation. -Anne, Lorne and our nurses! PS If you want to donate directly to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter (which is tax deductible), their mailing address is Box 20193, RPO Towne Centre, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 9H2
