Ok, we watched The Dallas Buyers Club tonight . . . not what I expected, but really, really good. Matthew McConaughhey was in the role of his career. A huge A+ for Jared Leto who looks like he lost even more weight for the role than McConaughey, Jennifer Garner was very subdued, and it was really great to see Steve Zahn play a little more of a grown up role -- rather than the stoner-dude I usually picture when I think of him. This is based on a true story and a real character -- Ron Woodruff starts out as being a total assh_le, and is never really likeable, BUT . . . you find yourself slowly more and more cheering for him. Although the main character is diagnosed as HIV positive, this is not really a tear jerker. It is more about a two bit hustler who turns some really bad luck into a personal and selfish crusade -- at least in the beginning. I give it a big thumbs up. By the way, make note of the performance of Dennis OHare who plays Jennifer Garners characters boss, who sees the testing of AZT as a profit center. Ive seen this guy more than once on Law & Order and think he is one of the best -and most unknown character actors in the business. If you ever see him play the manic depressive character on L&O who is forced on to taking meds to stand trial, it is an outstanding performance that should have won him an academy award. imdb/title/tt0790636/
