Ok, who all love to eat onions and garlic? I would say just about everyone I know does. some like them mild and some like them that blow the top of your head off (that would be me, the later one, LOL!!) Did you know that both are all Allium??? And that ALL Alliums are edible? Some are milder and some are stronger, more robust in flavour. This also includes the ornamental varieties that folks grow in their yards due to the showy blooms. Well, not only are they all edible, but as many of us know, they have very potent medicinal qualities as well. So, if you want to grow more, and have no one think to harvest your bulbs (as might happen with the common onion allium sativum types during economic collapse) grow the ornamental varieties like allium aflatunense which is very showy, attracts honey and bumble bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and are also known as the Persian Onion. It is an heirloom variety as well and thus can be grown from its seed. It grows all throughout the middle east and western asia. And no one who is not in the know, would ever harvest your allium as it is just a waste of water for show to them.
