Ok, you dont care what happen to Nigeria as long as you can get a job and live well. A friend I invited to Genvoices today told me to forget about any salvation movement and just work to feed myself. But is Genvoices about me or what I am going to eat? No. It is not about the me of today but the me of tomorrow. It is not even about me at all. In fact, Genvoices has nothing to do with today. It is about what happen to us and our kids in the Nigeria of tomorrow. We live in a hard and difficult Nation today, because that is what our forebears bequeted to us. We live in a land full of hardship because that is what we inherit from the past generation. But we can begin the journey of placing our own children (both born and unborn) in a different atmosphere of existence different from what we currently live in. We can give ourselves a better country to live in. And this is a job that is worthy, because we would be doing it for the children and people we love. If you love or will love your kids, this is a time to change the situation of a country they will be born into and live in. We must work together to do make-up for Nigeria and make it attractive, because we need Nigeria more than it needs us. If we are not here, other people can occupy this geographical space called Nigeria, but we can never claim another country and name it Nigeria. Yes, you may have struggled for initiatives like Genvoices in the past and achieve nothing, but you cant give up trying. Genvoices is different from any youth group you may have known or associate with. It is a pan-African and non-partisan youth movement that seeks to harness youth energy to drive change in Nigeria. You may be right that we are just wasting our time, and that nothing will change. But we do not share in your defeatist conviction. We believe that Nigeria can and will change. Already, there are prove that what we are doing is credible and worthy of support. Since we began just a little over six months now, endorsements and supports have not seized coming in. First Premium Time gave us support, then United Nations endorsed us, Channel Television became our media partner and as busy as business men can be; Aliko Dangote (President of Dangote Group of Companies) pledged 3 good hours of his busy schedule to this initiative. If after all these supports and endorsements, you still think we are wrong with this move, and that Genvoices will not achieve anything; then you are propably the wisest human being alive. But like I said, we do not share in your view. What we believe is different from yours. We believe that our nation is not cursed. We believe that Nigeria can change and be prosperous. We believe that our children can live in a much more beautiful country called Nigeria. We believe that our children will live in a country where poverty, unemployment and deprivation will only be a story and not actual experience. It will not happen because we just believe it would. But it will happen because we are ready to unite and work for it, all of us. It will happen because we will commit ourselves to it and do all it takes to get it achieved. This is the best we can do for the coming generation. If those of us who are shouting Genvoices today and doing everything we can to be the change we seek should abandon this task; who then will do it. If we are too busy fending for ourselves and our family to care about Nigeria, can our own success guarantee the success of so many other souls that will come into this world and into Nigeria specifically. Nasir El-rufai was a former Minister with wide connection and great network of friends, but yet he had difficulty getting job for his daughter after she graduate. Do you know what that means? It implies that our individual success and achievement would not shield those we love from sharing the suffering that a bad and mismanaged Nigeria will give birth to. The only thing that can safe us and those that will come after us is to climb down from our higher horses and look boldly at the simple fact that we are not too big to join those who seek change. When we look at those who work for change as jobless individuals; we are being ungrateful and unappreciative of the fact that they give what we refused to give. They give their time and God-given potentials to drive change in a country where, if lovely and beautiful, all of us would live a life of bliss and tranquility. You abuse every leader and President, but now you have a chance to serve and you couldnt. Just rememeber the words of Elridge Cleaver- If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. You are just too valuable to this generation to constitute a problem. So why not instead be the solution we all seek? Join Genvoices today and be a part of the change you want to see. Our voices are already loud, but they can be louder if you add yours.
