Okay- relax and take a deep breath. Now exhale and breathe! This is easy. How to Do a PC Diagnostic Keeping your PC in good health requires the usage of diagnostic and repair tools. Running these diagnostic tools constitutes part of a good computer maintenance routine. A number of these tools are incorporated into your operating system and can be accessed at any time. However, there are also several third party tools that are useful too. Depending on your systems configuring, running a full PC diagnostic can take several hours. 1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Defragmenter. This opens the hard drive defragmentation tool. Click Analyze Disk then click Defragment Disk after it has finished analyzing your hard disk. Disk fragmentation refers to the way data is written onto the disk. Over time, data is distributed onto the disk in less-than-optimal patterns -- it becomes highly fragmented, which can severely impact your computers performance. Disk defragmentation alleviates this problem. If the disk has not been defragmented for a long time, you may need to run the process several times in succession before the disk is optimized. 2. Launch your anti-virus program. Run a full system scan. The procedure to run a full scan varies according to your software. This scan can take anywhere from minutes to hours, depending on your system configuration and hard drive size. Delete, quarantine or ignore any flagged files or folders, depending on the action recommended by the scanner. 3. Click Start. Type dxdiag into the Search box and press Enter. This opens the DirectX Diagnostics Tool. It will run a brief scan of your systems hardware. Click on each tab at the top of the window. Depending on your hardware, these might include tabs such as System, Display, Sound, and Input. Look at the Notes section at the bottom of each tab. This section tells you if the diagnostic found any problems with this particular piece of hardware. If any problems are found, they can often be solved by installing the latest drivers for that piece of hardware. 4. Download and run PC diagnostic software. These applications come in a broad range, and can monitor statistics such as CPU speed as well as other information such as the motherboard chipset temperature.
