Okay. Anybody who ever wasnt sure whether Columbus Day was divisive, please enjoy my fb feed. Now, I would like to make two suggestions which, when combined, would solve every problem anybody has ever had in the history of the world. Because I am amazing. 1. Change out Columbus Day for Da Vinci Day. This preserves both the celebration of Italian contribution to history and the focus on discovery, albeit of a different (and, youll notice, less bloody) sort. Aside from Italian-Americans, it should also prove entertaining for artists, engineers, futurists, and conspiracy theorists. 2. Celebrate Thanksgiving by actually giving thanks...to the Native Americans who saved the Pilgrims from icy starvy death. By celebrating their cultures (theres more than one! truefax!) as well as our own stubborn will to survive, by honoring them as fellow peoples among us to whom we owe a considerable debt, we could actually regain some kind of meaning for the event apart from being National Pig-Out Day. And maybe, just maybe, one day, it would become possible to celebrate our presence in this big, gorgeous land in a way that wasnt totally skeevy to the people who got here first.
