Okay...First on the viewing list was R.I.P.D. Apparently based on a Dark Horse comic, this was way more derivative of paranormal investigation farces like Ghostbusters and Men in Black. Maybe this could be marketed to less discerning territories as Corpsebusters. But at least the originals in those series from 1984 and 1997 were fresh and funny, able to meld exciting visuals and charismatic deadpan chemistry to show there was something close to life. But if the recent Men in Black III provoked a meh, the grade for this is closer to meh minus. The three principal male leads are playing at the same roles youve seen in other movies: Ryan The Green Lantern Reynolds, Jeff True Grit Bridges and Kevin Super Bacon. The Annie Potts/Rip Torn MVP role goes to Mary-Louise Parker as Proctor, who is eerily reminiscent of Flo the Progressive Girl, but knows her stuff well enough to steal the movie (also, James Hong and Buzz from Home Alone is in it). But this is punishingly flat for something released in 3-D, with very little invention and bloodless, graceless CG failing to help the illusions the film offers. There were some nice touches here and there, especially the actual R.I.P.D. office with its assortment of historically diverse policemen and spectral access tunnel, and I cant hate a movie with Jeff Bridges too much. But meh minus is all you need to know.
