Okay, I think we’ve had our fill of Flexipop!’s Famous Firsts. Now it’s time for… FLEXIPOP!’S (not so) SLOPPY SECONDS! No.1 - Boys Dont Cry by The Cure And what better way to open up proceedings than the Most Popular Act as voted by Flexipop! readers in our recent poll. Yep, The Cure. Released in June 1979, Boys Dont Cry was The Cure’s second single, the follow-up to Killing An Arab. Written by Michael Dempsey, Robert Smith, and Lol Tolhurst, the lyrics tell the story of a man who has given up trying to regain the love he’s lost, and disguises his true emotional state by laughing ‘cos boys don’t cry (wanna bet?). Alas, the single only made it to No.99… in Australia. In April 1986 the song was remixed and the vocals re-recorded and released under the title New Voice-New Mix to promote the compilation album Standing On A Beach, although the original version appeared on the album. New Voice-New Mix peaked at 22 in the UK and was a Top 40 hit in five other countries. The song has featured in the movies The Wedding Singer, Starter for Ten, Nick And Norahs Infinite Playlist and Bertolucci’s Me And You in 2012. In 1999, a cover version by Nathan Larson was used as the title song of the film Boys Dont Cry and another version by Grant-Lee Phillips appeared in 2011’s Friends With Benefits. September sees the publication of Obscure, Andy Vella’s book of rare and unseen photographs of the band that has been 33 years in the making. Robert Smith has written the foreword. For further details go to forulicodex/catalogue. Next month The Cure also headline three Riot Festivals in Toronto (6th), Chicago (14th) and Denver (20th). Check out Robert’s truly bizarre Welcome To The Working Week on the Flexipop! website flexipop/workingweek04.html The video below is not available on mobile devices (but it’s a corker and not often seen so that’s why it’s here) so for those of you stuck inside of mobile with the Memphis blues again, here’s a singalonga live version in the days when Robert Smith had short hair! Altogether now… youtu.be/2dnjuGPSor0
