Okay, Im really beginning to get pissed off! First, I dont give a tinkers dam if Charlie Daniels classifies me as excluded from the number of salt of the earth middle Americans. Second, Billy Eichner (whoever the hell he is) obviously did not study logic, since If you dont like American Sniper then u dont like our country & if you dont like Troop Beverly Hills then you dont like OUR TROOPS! is pretty much the textbook exemplar of a logical fallacy. He must be a comedian. Finally, I absolutely refuse to be told that I must like a movie or else risk being called un-American or anti-troops. I didnt like the movie. In fact, I thought it was codswallop. But that has not stopped me from joining in solidarity with the repatriated veterans of two colonial wars which I opposed from the outset. This social media blitzkrieg by an unholy alliance of rightwing agitators and cynical studio ad executives is really beginning to chafe me at the bit. The film was two and a half hours which celebrated slaughter without consequence, occupation without scruples, and repatriation without acknowledgement. Any goddam fool can wave a flag and cry at the sound of Taps. Its takes commitment, empathy and a sense of justice to offer sanctuary and succour to the men and women who left their innocence and their souls behind on some neglected battlefield. To hell with these summer soldiers and sunshine patriots who think a profession of support on Twitter makes them morally superior, while simultaneously transmuting a mediocre film into a litmus test for patriotism.
