Okay, Im sorry, but the term tar baby isnt any more racist than please dont throw me in that briar patch. The metaphor has nothing to do with the baby being black, it has to do with being made out of a sticky substance. It could be a bubble gum baby or a molasses baby. Yes, its from Uncle Remus stories which have all sorts of racist overtones. But, if thats the measuring stick, then other perfectly good phrases like the briar patch comment have to go as well. The tar baby metaphor is a wonderful description of a person who cant let well-enough alone and interprets silence as an insult. Brer Rabbit would have been just fine if he had just walked past the sticky baby. There is REAL discrimination, REAL injustice, and REAL insensitivity to black people out there.
