Okay. Little rant time. We got some new Chromebooks over the summer. Some of them are kept in a padlocked laptop cart in a back room of the library. I do not have a key. A teacher has randomly stopped following protocol this year and has often sent some of his students down to borrow laptops to take back to class. He only has 7 students, so its not a huge order to fill. BUT, the only thing I have access to with keys is another cart of laptops in the back room. These laptops ARE old and slow. But theyre functional. Today, kids came as per usual with no heads up for laptops. No one was using them, so I was able to get them. A little later in the block, a student came back and said that they wanted the chromebooks because the computers they were using were slow and didnt work well with what they wanted to use. I explained politely that I didnt have keys to the chromebook cart - and couldnt even be sure there WERE Chromebooks in the cart (since its a locked metal cart with no way to see in). The student went back to class and then the teacher sent her back again, with the same request! I had to say I dont have any way to get into the Chromebooks. I have no keys. Thats all you can have unless your teacher wants to use the lab. Then after school, the teacher came back to apologize briefly for sending the student down so much - before moving into a soliloquy about how the existing computers suck and how its also terrible that the district promises things but then only kind of delivers. Right. Because I have personal control over ANY of that. (Did I also mention that the laptops dont belong to the library and are technically not part of my job) *ugh*
