Okay,... My Letter to Selig Enterprises Dear Selig Company, I know not many of you actually live in Athens, and I mean Athens proper within the bypass, otherwise I know you would be opposed to your planned project for Oconee Street. You will not have to live your decision. Please, Please reconsider your proposal, it is going to fail if you do not. There are currently over 1700 + empty bedrooms ay any given time in Athens according to a friend of mine who owns rental properties. The structure you build will add to this surplus. What make you feel that you will actually stick out from the many other projects undergoing construction now? Several of which have already gone through foreclosure. Here is a link to a New York Times article about the current rise of "Luxury Student Housing" and their adverse effect on academics. nytimes/2013/06/15/us/in-luxury-student-housing-gym-tan-and-study.html . You have a beautiful space there with what could be a park overlooking the Oconee River for children to play in if you were to reconsider your decision to build the generic mall looking project and instead create a more community like environment much like Greenwich Village, the Haight Ashbury, or Boston Common as well. Single residency units geared toward Professors teacher staff and non-traditional married students. Imagine tree lined streets with walk up entrances, a small courtyard out back with an allee or street side for parking and utilities. This urban design has been successful for years in the great cities of the world, and should you reconsider your current design, would make Athens one of the great cities for Urban Living and not just a mall for students. Thank you very much, Paul Butchart resident for 35 years.
