Okay. Time to call their bluff. The BS for Better Futures web site lists several goals, each with subgoals (see below). So heres one that looks reasonable: Develop responsible path out of annual deficits. Fine. How about, at the December board meeting, charging the superintendent and general counsel with the task of demanding the immediate return of Istrouma High School and Prescott Middle School, either restored to a condition no worse than when they were seized by the state or with a sufficient transfer of funds to compensate for the damage done to the property while it was under the states mismanagement. Glen Oaks Middle should likewise be returned, with the provision that the current charter occupant (kindergarten only) should be permitted to continue using part of the campus until the end of this school year, at which point they can find a suitable alternate location. How does this fit the goal, one might ask? There are thousands of middle and high school students in north-central Baton Rouge who have rejected the RSD in favor of locally-run schools, but would likely return if they could attend the schools in their neighborhoods. Spending money on instruction and not busing makes good fiscal sense. So does carefully managing the real estate under your control. Theres no need to wait until January. Eight of the board members are already seated. So if you think this is idea, contact your board members and insist that they get our locally-owned schools back under local control, starting with these three. Mark Bellue can catch up in January. Itll be okay. So, David Tatman, Jill Dyason, Evelyn Ware Jackson, Barbara Reich Freiberg, Connie Bernard, Tarvald Anthony Smith, Vereta Lee and Kenyetta Q. Nelson: Will see see an agenda item to discuss this topic? Or should I address this message to Lane Grigsby and Adam Knapp? betterschoolsbetterfutures/our-goals/
