Okay, back to the pump house and the matter of pulling the rods. - TopicsExpress

Okay, back to the pump house and the matter of pulling the rods. In the background of my current profile picture, there is a small building with a tin roof and rock and cement walls. Inside there was an electricity -powered pump, which pumped water up from a well to be used in the household. I dont remember all the details, but one year my father allowed me to help him pull the rods. I would gather that this was an action that needed to be performed at intervals. I suppose the main reason for this was to clean and/or replace the rubbers, which were down inside the well, at the bottom of a succession of long wooden rods that were intercvonnecting, extending down into the ground. The first thing we did, was to slide the roof off the pump-house, pulling it in the downhill direction. To the right in the picture. The roof wasnt all that heavy, although it seems to me that my mother may have come out to help us with that. Then my dad disconnected the electric power, and removed the pump from its position over the well. Then we began the process of pulling up the rods, one by one, disconnecting the top one, as the next one came into position, and locking that next one into place, while we took the top rod out to lie on the back yard. The rods were wet and bright orange with rust that had accumulate. It seemed as if there were a lot of the rods, but I dont suppose there could have been much more than 10. The leathers were a flexible device at the bottom, that gathered the water, and sent it upward on its journey. I found the whole procecdure rather exceiting. I never participated again, but I supposed it must have happened, since I was in my early teens then, and my parents didnt get put on the community water line until after I was in my 20s/
