Okay because its the last day of Black History month, I am a pretty neutral person when it comes to race. I observe every angle of race and race relations in our society, and they really suck noodles. Yes, our history in America sucks.. Ole America the Beautiful, judgmental, divisive, control freaks we are. If the history of racism in ur society/world didnt exist, I wouldnt care about being black, blue, green, and would probably prefer to be purple. But saying race doesnt matter to me at all, whole-heartedly, would be a lie. I am a black woman, raising young black men in the USA. So though it doesnt affect me personally, it affects me overall, you understand? My 8 year old son sees no color, and loves his best friend HOLDEN Mary Frances Hoover Luffman, and often when he hears talk of race relation in passing on the news, music, and occasionally from my own lips, he seems puzzled. I hate that I even have to teach him our brutal history, though I know it is mandatory. INNOCENT ARE WE UNTIL TAUGHT OTHERWISE. It is crazy that I feel so guilty about teaching him, in fear of it inciting a negative opinion. His opinion on friendships, career choice, and even his love interest. My dad, rest his beautiful soul, did such an amazing job in teaches us our history and its brutality, while instilling humanity in us.. Is it not enough that I have to guard him from, our the present state of stereotype and this desensitizing and demoralizing media? Is this what FREEDOM IS??? HAVE WE NOT LEARNED ANYTHING? This world just wont let us be great humans. And I sometimes hate that I even have to claim race. Proud of my African American heritage but disspoointed in the societys constant reminder of having to have your guard up when being Black in America.. And I siad all that to say this……. (TO MY BLACK PEOPLE) What I hate most, even more than our brutal past is our brutal present. Not from the outside, but SELF HATRED from within my black Community. BLACK COMES IN MANY SHADES. LETS LOVE OURSELVES ENOUGH TO NOT CREATE DIVISION WITHIN OUR OWN COMMUNITY. It is crazy the the Light Skinned vs. Dark skinned mentality still exist. We cant bash and condemn our slaved history if we are the ones keeping it alive. From Lupita Nyong to Paula Patton, and Idris Elba to Jesse Williams , Pres. Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Aiko Dangote, Michael Steele, Alicia Keyes, Whoopi Goldberg (most famously) we are a spectrum of colors. We limit ourselves when we focus too much on our surface. We are to be celebrated beyond 28 days. Love ourselves beyond the flesh. I still believe in humanity.. I JUST WANT MY KIDS TO BE GREAT and to know HUMANITY and COMPASSION. Like History, Science, the English Language, IT IS TAUGHT… INTOLERANCE is a LEARNED BEHAVIOR. WITHIN OUR RACE and OTHERWISE. THE WAR ON RACE, RELIGION, AND Fight for POWER, OUT WEIGHS THE WAR ON POVERTY IN OUR COUNTRY.. Their are kids our here dying of starvation and we worried about Pharrell having no dark skinned women on his album cover. Really. Is that the petition we send out people???
