Okay everyone who wishes to know. The City of Americus budget meeting is being held on Monday November 17, 2014 at Reese Park School. The meeting starts at 0800. Here is some of what is known: the city has a millage rate of 10.32 an increase to 14.01 would take care of the One point five million dollar shortfall in the city’s budget. This would only average about fifty dollars for most homeowners in the city. Closing a fire station is nothing more than a quick fix at best. This will free up around five hundred thousand dollars for the 2015 budget year which will not even cover the shortfall, Also if we do lose a station this would move the ISO rating above a 2, which in turn would cost business in the city dearly. A hundred thousand policy is around seven hundred dollars at the ISO class 2 currently held by Americus Fire and Emergency services. When the ISO rating goes above a three it increases to seventeen hundred dollars for the same one hundred thousand dollar policy. There will also be fewer or no prevention, fire safety education programs or participation in community events. We also provide Christmas for needy families with money raised totally in-house throughout the year by AFD. We do a lot more for the community than most will ever know and this would truly move the City of Americus backwards, which we may never overcome!
