Okay, fellow musicians, I need your help. Some of you have been witness to my love/hate relationship with soundmen. After humping gear myself, setting up, tearing down, and hauling back home, I gave them credit for what they do. Heres the thing though...to be a soundman, you have to have the understanding of how sound works, how to mix different instruments and vocals for optimal effect, and how to LISTEN to what it is THE BAND wants. In recent months, weve found our shows much more successful when we have OUR OWN soundman at the board for our set, when opening for other bands. He knows what we need, when we need it, and trying to explain all that to someone who has never run sound for us (and most dont listen when you do explain) has proven to be fruitless, so, now we absolutely INSIST that our soundman runs our sound for our set, and steps back off when were done. So what do you do when a soundman agrees, and then renegs right when you take the stage, and not only WILL NOT work with your soundman to optimize your set, but continues to screw it up the whole way through? The damage is done, the fun is GONE out of the gig, and people are posting video of us with horrible sound all because some guy wants to be an arrogant diva and not step aside so our guy can do his job. I mean, doesnt it benefit EVERYONE if WE sound the best that we can??? Add to that the lightguy who becomes offended because you ask him to turn off the fog machine because it dries out your throat in a New York minute...what to do??? Thoughts???
