Okay...fine. This has been bothering me for some time and I feel compelled to say something about it. It is about the protests in Ferguson so if youre sick of hearing about it then skip to the next post containing funny pictures of kittens or puppies in costumes. Believe me, though, I am sick of hearing about it too. We are just sick of it for extremely different reasons. Call him a thug. Call him a crook, thief, fiend, vagabond, bully, menace whatever your vernacular allows. The penalty under law for each of those words is not death. This isnt the old west. The law prohibits people, even law enforcement, from becoming judge and jury. Michael Brown was entitled to the same rights as you or I under the constitution. He had the right to due process if he was, in fact, one of those words above. He was denied that right. I happen to agree with the protestors (exclude the opportunistic a-holes using this opportuniyy to acquire a new TV for justice and the slick haired ambulance chasers) and my agreement comes from the fact that I am a Black man! Yeah! Believe it or not! Most of you here know I am not thuggish. Many have referred to me as the whitest black man you know. (Not a compliment by the way but that a post for another day). I can almost guarantee that 9 out of 10 Black men can sympathize with the protestors. Almost all of us have been pulled over, strong handed, frisked, etc by the police because we fit the description.... It happens EVERY SINGLE DAY! The police have long done this. You are just now hearing about it with the proliferation of camera phones. Do you think Rodney King was the first time? Most Black children of my genrration were reared by most of our parents on the pictures of peaceful protestors beaten by clubs, bitten by dogs, sprayed with fire hoses, dragged through the streets by the men in the same uniform as officer Wilson. The injustice didnt stop there people. It is seen every day in every hood in the country Eric Garner and Mike Brown didnt deserve to die. Whether is hands were honor down. Whether he robbed a store or walked in the street and didnt move. He did not deserve to die. I dont care what witnesses say, what the cops say, what the media says. The police do not get to circumvent the laws they have chosen to defend.
