ALS stands for Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease in the US. Its a neurodegenarative disease with multiple causes. This includes muscle spasm, weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in life necessities such as breathing and will later end in death. Only about 4% survive longer than 10 years, though there have been very rare cases where a person with ALS will last over 50 years.
