Okay guys, here is our topic for this upcoming meeting. Unfortunately, I cant remember who suggested this topic at the meeting, so please post a comment to take credit. Gender discrimination topics have been at the forefront of social reform over the past century. Part of this movement is concerned with domestic abuse and how gender affects those abused. Recently, videos like this (https://youtube/watch?v=u3PgH86OyEM) have sought to bring up the issue. While this is obviously anecdotal, it still brings up an important question: do we discriminate against men when it comes to domestic abuse? What are the statistics concerning rates of abuse in genders? Why do these discrepancies exist? Does historical context (history of society, not personal history) matter when determining how to treat abuse? What does it ultimately mean for genders to be equal? Links: Statistics provided by the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (United States): opdv.ny.gov/professionals/abusers/genderandipv.html Article arguing for separate centers of treatment for abused men and women: theguardian/commentisfree/2014/aug/05/domestic-violence-services-gender-neutral Article claiming that there is widespread gender discrimination against men in terms of abuse treatment (note how the statistics cited conflict with the above article): theguardian/society/2010/sep/05/men-victims-domestic-violence Salon article discussing recent link between sports figures and domestic abuse: salon/2014/09/25/the_domestic_violence_gender_trap_hope_solo_ray_rice_and_the_tired_myopia_of_women_do_it_too/ I ask that if you have any comments on the topic, please write them down and present them to the club at the meeting, rather than commenting below. And of course, if you notice any mistakes or oversights in what I have written, please point them out so they can be corrected.
