Okay....if a babyface just had to beat Flair for the belt in the Fall of 1987, just so he could win it back at Starrcade, do you think they picked the wrong Garvin? That whole Garvins vs Flair program was designed to set up Ron winning, and the idea was to use Precious and Jimmy to get Ron over. Thing is....I always thought it was Jimmy and Precious that were really getting over, and Crockett/Dusty couldnt/didnt want to get it: Ronnie was no doubt really over in the towns as someone the Mid Atlantic fans bought as a babyface tough guy, but he was a very conservative choice, and the first time in the modern era that someone who was neither an elite worker nor the hottest superstar won the NWA title. Think about it: that GAB 87 cage match with Flair vs Jimmy was built as a stop on the road to Ronnie winning the title....but what if, in the peak of the insane heat during that match, with Jimmy seemingly crippled from Flair busting up his leg, he made a comeback and won the title, maybe just a roll up even. Still not an elite worker winning the title, but something about the Jimmy and Precious chemistry resonated with the fans in a certain way that I could see them getting behind his winning, and the inevitable rematch, huge....whereas with Ronnie they didnt care, and the story they were trying to tell didnt translate....
