Okay, its time to piss off some of my liberal friends. I appreciate how easily that is accomplished in that I live with one. Coming to a police department near you - affirmative action hiring. :( I understand all of the reasons that affirmative action came into being, but eventually there comes a time when it becomes a bit ridiculous. I first became adverse to the concept as I witnessed my brother graduate from UCLA with the goal of entering a very specific law school - Hastings in San Francisco. What made Hastings very special was that the faculty was comprised of distinguished, retired jurists who were often the authors of the text books used. With excellent grades and a high LSAT, he was a cinch to be accepted. Wrong, but at least they were honest with him when they informed him that much less qualified minority students would be accepted in his place. He delivered pizza for a year (probably what his replacements should have been doing), and finally got into Hastings and has now been practicing law for many years in California. The second thing that gave me an incredible distaste for the concept was that after the Vietnam War, I was highly involved in the air transport of many of the Vietnamese so-called boat people. They were a pathetic bunch carrying old, ragged satchels containing their worldly belongings, wearing rags for clothing and unable to speak English. A high percentage of the kids, starting with nothing going for them and unable to speak the language became the valedictorians of their high school classes. You cant buy desire to succeed. Spoon feeding will not change anything other than hurt those who are more qualified. Oh and yes, our relatives (on both sides) arrived from Ukraine on a boat with nothing but desire and no one gave them squat. They (and I) earned everything we accomplished with no outside boosts at the expense of others. BTW, I have a particular personal interest in the two examples given. I was a police officer for 5 years (motorcycle cop) for the Palo Alto Police Department and I attended law school.
