Okay kids, long video with potato quality warning. But I just ran - TopicsExpress

Okay kids, long video with potato quality warning. But I just ran across this, and there are folks on my friends list here who play instruments, or are learning instruments, or are just interested in knowing more about things having to do with music playing. This guy is Janos Starker. He was a seriously accomplished professional cellist, and a hell of a good teacher (which is not a common combination, not at this level). His name is known widely among cello students because he edited and curated certain editions of our performance sheet music repertoire as well as several of the well-known technical exercise and etude compilations weve been subject to. I first learned his name, because my private teacher during high school had studied under him. And now, having seen the way Starker taught, Im afraid I have to say that Starker was the better teacher. (Though I guess to be fair, I was an idiot of a student during those years, so maybe it all balances out). Anyway, if youve got the time, you might enjoy seeing what this guy has to say about the broad fundamentals of instrumental technique, and how to think about them. He walks his class through some simple physical exercises here that I was just now finding really insightful and useful. If you want to skip ahead to that bit with the group exercise, its here: https://youtube/watch?v=Z6f5kcjIq6I#t=853 Otherwise, this is a good starting point for the whole video (skipping all the boring intro bits): https://youtube/watch?v=Z6f5kcjIq6I#t=328
