Okay magazine publishers of Ontario, just to be clear about ten things: 1) Your unpaid internships are illegal. Thats not a debate. 2) Yes, that means you, non-profits. 3) The Ministry of Labour isnt targeting you, its the law, youve just been getting a free ride along with everyone else who gets work for no money. 4) We dont believe you when you say you cant paid interns because you dont have the money - if you cant pay them, maybe youre not a viable business. Also, your salary isnt hurting. 5) We dont believe you when you say interns are onerous and a pain in the ass to manage. I guess thats why The Walrus has 11, because, you know, if one or two interns are a pain, 11 must be way less of a pain. 6) Its not the governments job to train people to work at your magazine, nor is it the role of universities and colleges. Hiring smart people and training them to understand your way of working is your job. Do it. 7) Yes, students can learn from internships and make connections. That isnt diminished by paying them. 8) Your unpaid internships have taken advantage of young people, often women, and have made it impossible for young people, whose family lack financial resources, to participate. 9) If you cant afford to pay interns, you cant afford to hire them, and if this is epidemic in your industry, thats a bit of a come-on, isnt it? 10) This isnt complicated: pay your interns, problem over. If you cant, dont hire them, and if you cant make a go of it then well, really, tough. labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/pubs/internships.php
