Okay now honestly here. The orchestra at Fond du Lac High School needs money. They need new instruments, especially cellos because literally all the schools are shit. Theyre shit! Thats the only way to describe them. Theyre either cheap with varnish that never keeps them in tune because the tuning pegs slip, they have poor resonance because theyre that old, the bows explode from tiny bumps, the bows dont hold rosin anymore, the strings snap because theyre 1000 years old. They break so easily from little accidents that shouldnt break them as badly as they do. Most of the unused cellos have no strings or bridges/dangerously warped bridges because theyre just that darn old. Now, Im not just pointing out the cellos because cello is my main orchestral instrument. Im positive there are many many issues with the rest of the violins, violas, and the what, 6 school basses we have? But the reason we orchestra kids have to suffer with these issues is because it seems like just a little amount of the money the music program gets goes to the orchestra wing. Its all band, choir, and drama, and yes they need it as much as we do, but its such a struggle to find enough good instruments that kids can use. Orchestra should be a fun experience just like choir and band, right? And the people who cant afford their own instruments should be able to play on instruments that are almost, or are, as good as personal instruments. Right now, my school-owned cello that Ive been using since the start of last year is in the shop for repairs because the neck snapped off of the body. It looked like it had happened before because there was a thin line all the way around the point of breakage that had been sealed previously. Theres no other instruments I can use without using somebody elses instrument, which puts me in the position of being a suspect should the other person damage the instrument. All the money the school ever gets all goes to the sports, which is pretty crappy and unfair to the people who arent a part of sports or anything athletic because what do they get? Nothing. Its total crap, and its not just myself who feels this way about all of this. A few of my friends, and then a lot of people in orchestra hate how almost nothing is given to the orchestra.
