Okay, obviously I should have been more detailed in my story of Luke Durst, the flat coated mix who had surgery today, that we introduced in an earlier post. So many people are posting, messaging, emailing, wanting to know why we would not have done the surgery for the owner so that Luke could stay in his home. We of course have had instances in the past where we have quietly assisted in situations such as this so that dogs could stay with their owners and we did offer the opportunity for Luke. Lukes previous owner considered it and was very grateful. But he is a college student preparing to graduate in the spring. This situation made him realize that he cant actually care for Luke, with the security he would like. It made him think...what if something else were to happen medically and again, I cant provide for him? ..... he also took into consideration that he is applying for jobs in various parts of the country...no clue what his future holds...or where he will be living (most likely apartments). With the vision changes that Luke has gone through, he really wanted Luke to be able to find a good stable home, where he could learn his surroundings and settle in and have a nice fenced in backyard to securely play. He really thought all of this through....it was not a quick decision and we support him on it. This was a very selfless act. But Luke is strong secure dog and took immediately to his foster family....hes going to be fine. Yes, his owner misses him. Yes, we are in contact with his previous owner, he was the first one I texted when Luke was out of surgery. Its all good. One day, he will rescue another dog in Lukes honor when he is settled in life and knows that he can care for him 100% no matter what happens. And that will be one very lucky dog.
