Okay, so I have a theory...I have been reading the Gospel of John and I have noticed something concerning the usage of Moses by the fourth Apostle. John speaks of Moses 12 times, more than any other Gospel writer (Matthew, 7; Mark 8; Luke 10), and in almost every example, Moses is mentioned in contrast to Christ. The other Gospel writers mention Moses enough, but usually only as an authority. Perhaps Johns original recipients were more Jewish than most scholars think (Matthew is typically seen as a Gospel to the Jewish people) - individuals who were struggling in the wake of persecution and were tempted to return to their former belief system...a system that was protected under Roman law (cf. Jn. 11:48).
