Okay, so heres a difficult one for the day, but one that will tear at the heart and reinforce why we came together in the first place. Through a referral from Advocates for the Homeless, weve learned of a mother and four children who have been in a local motel for the past three weeks. As funding from a number of relief agencies runs out tomorrow, this family will be living in their car beginning tomorrow night. Three of the four children are in the county school system - ages 14,12, and 5 - I am sure their only constancy. The family is on a waiting list to get into public housing, but has yet to hear a reply for her urgent call for assistance. I am trying to establish contact with the mother, but in the meantime, my sense tells me that we need to gather some funds to buy this family some time until they gain some relief from public assistance. I know that we all might have some amount of personal conflict with this, and I accept that. But if we stay focused on doing right by the children, we might be able to provide some relief that provides a light at the end of the tunnel for them all.
