Okay, so the estimable Tom.e Palmer assigned me the BOOMTOWN RATS. This band taught me about dismissing things too quickly and not paying attention and trying to be a know all. All those things are at best unbecoming and usually one ends up being wrong. Back when their first 2 albums came out, this older woman I knew (i.e. college girl) came back from her post graduation trip to Europe to Texas just besotted with the Boomtown Rats and put them on in heavy rotation at her apartment. Worldly wise at 17, a legend in my own mind, I was, Whats so special about this group? I didnt get it. But a few years passed and I saw them on television (2 songs performed in front of that brick wall on the show Evening at the Improv) and I was knocked out by them. So I had to take back all the snooty things Id said. Ive never see them live, but wish I had seen Bob Geldolf at SXSW Mollie McLean Staffa assures me that really missed out and I dont doubt that. As much as Im not one to choose the hits and almost always prefer the deep cuts, I still gotta say my favorite song by them is I Dont Like Mondays, its just too damned perfect.
