Okay... so this weekend. I saw an Excel Gold gymnast perform the best – most beautiful – 2 backwalkovers in a row ever. The standing leg never bent as she reached back, the split was 185 degreed, straight-legged, the connection continuous without rushing. There was never any hint of correction. You could see the perfect outline of circles her legs made as she moved. AND… This Level 10 athlete warmed up a front aerial - immediate side aerial. (Complete badassery at any level.) Well, in competition, the front aerial was dangerously off and it wasn’t a pretty fall – not a complete “will-she-be-able-to-have-children incident,” but close. Undaunted, she proceeds to get up – after looking at the beam as if it were its fault – and easily manages a CONNECTED front handspring – immediate side aerial. (This, apparently, was her back-up badassery.) Then, she proceeds to do a switch-side half (again, ridiculous), but she performed the skill such that the straddle was not demonstrated length wise but in a cross position after she completed 180 of the 270 degree the turn. And landed as if the floor were under her. These athletes are nothing short of superheroes. I’m so lucky. And my level 4s won their meet – all in all, a good weekend of gymnastics. Kelly Thompson Keown - The above gym... is for you. Also, I grow old … I grow old … / I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
