Okay, so what about genetically modified foods? Genetically Modified Foods can be incredibly beneficial to human health. These products can provide individuals with nutritional security, as well as a lower chance of obtaining diet-related diseases. Through genetic engineering, crops containing an abundance of nutrients and minerals are produced. As well, by genetically altering crops, farmers can cultivate pest-resistant crops. The diet of more than 3 billion people worldwide includes inadequate levels of essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A and iron. Deficiency in just these two micronutrients can result in severe anemia, a condition in which there is a deficiency of red blood cells, and even death. Golden Rice, a genetically modified grain product developed by scientists in Germany, is rich beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A after digestion. This genetically enhanced rice could help thousands of children suffering from vitamin A deficiency. Anti-GM advocacy groups and concerned scientists are asking for more controls and regulations for genetically engineered crops. Individuals are concerned that these crops may have unpredictable effects on human health, have a negative impact on our environment and allow pests to develop antibiotic resistance to pesticides. Like many issues in science, the debate continues as to whether the benefits of consuming genetically modified crops outweigh the potential risks. Want to know more?
