Okay, what am I up to now? (Or what the heck is that in the middle of my backyard?) Hiroko and I love Shiitake mushrooms. I am an organic gardener and while doing some research online I came across a way of growing those delicious fungi, so I thought I would give it a try. When I ordered my cord of oak firewood (delivered yesterday) I also asked that they bring a “freshly cut” oak log 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. I have to soak them for a few days, drill some holes in the logs and put in the spores, seal the hole with bees wax and in 6 months we should have the first harvest of Shiitake mushrooms. Shiitake will only grow in/on oak logs. Once the logs are put wherever I am going to keep those very heavy logs, they have to be watered periodically. After the first ones emerge, we should have a continuous harvest for about 5 years. Yum!
