Okay, word people: What is a succinct definition of the proper use of the word fictions? Since fiction is used to indicate a collective body of work (Tolkiens fiction), then I think a title of an essay that addresses McCarthys Fictions is erroneous. But if I say The popular cultural figures of Santa Claus and Robin are recognized as exaggerated fictions even though they are based on historical figures ... that sounds right. So is the difference that I am using the term fictions in the sense of inventions or concepts rather than a body of imaginative storytelling?
