Okey dokey, let’s have a quick science lesson, just too re-fresh your memory for those that haven’t been to school for a while… An atom is the smallest basic unit of a chemical element A molecule is an electrically neutral group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. There are two types of Ions in the air - Negative Ions and Positive Ions. Negative Ions are odourless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Negative Ions are the ones that are good for you and are naturally found in Nature in large quantities around waterfalls, rolling surf and after a thunderstorm. They are created in nature as air molecules break apart due to sunlight, natural radiation, and moving air and water such as an icy breeze or lightning storm. They serve a useful purpose by filtering the air of dust, pollen, smoke and pollutants. Ever noticed the air has the spark of freshness to it after a lightning storm or the air surrounding a big ocean swell? That’s because the air is overwhelmed with negative ions. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy. You may have experienced the power of negative ions when you last went surfing or walked beneath a waterfall While part of the euphoria is simply being around these wondrous settings and away from the normal pressures of home and work, the air circulating at the beach is said to contain tens of thousands of negative ions "The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain" says ion researcher Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York The feeling you get when at the beach or standing at the foot of a forest waterfall is due to the invigorating power of oxygen with a higher content of negative ions. Positive ions have the opposite effect, quite often inducing a feeling of tiredness and an excess of positive ions creates hyperactivity exhaustion, anxiety and depression. Compare the levels of negative ions in the natural environment to those in the human environment. In fact surf everyday if possible. You’ll be much more productive on a day to day basis and a whole lot happier!
