Oklahoma City We arrived in Oklahoma City after a day full of delayed and missed flights, and settled in to our accommodation. Since we were exhausted from the full day of travel, we decided to grab some dinner at a nearby restaurant, and watch the NBA on TV. We began our first full day by venturing in to the downtown area to explore what the city had to offer. Oklahoma is business oriented town, full of multinational corporations and large energy companies, and even though it was the weekend, a lot of shops were closed and it felt a bit like a ghost town. After walking around for a while, we eventually stumbled across the newly established area of Bricktown, an area full of various restaurants, bars and things to do! We then headed to the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, dedicated to the victims of the 1995 Oklahoma bombing. 168 people lost their lives, and many more were seriously injured, when extremist Timothy McVeigh detonated a van containing over 2,200kg of homemade explosives outside a government building in the centre of Oklahoma City. This event is still documented as the biggest domestic act of terrorism in Americas history. The moving memorial takes you through the moments leading up to the bombing, the investigation in to the perpetrator, and the amazing response from the community in the rebuilding of the city. We finished the night with a trip to movies and tapas for dinner. Since no buses operate on Sundays, our final day started with a walk down to the Bricktown area once again. We settled in to a restaurant owned by one of my favourite basketball players and Oklahoma Thunder superstar Kevin Durant. Here we enjoyed some authentic southern style cuisine while looking at the vast amount memorabilia on showcase at the restaurant. We finished our final day with our usual NFL Sundays, and a trip to the Chesapeake Arena to watch our injury riddled NBA team, the Oklahoma Thunder, defeat the visiting Sacramento Kings. Off to Denver!
